The Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective.

When and Where: Club-level winners will compete at their respective Regional-level contests in March. Regional-level winners will compete at the District-level contest to be held at the Pacific Northwest Optimist District Spring Board Meeting in Longview, Washington from April 24-26, 2020.

Optimist International hosts an annual Oratorical and Essay Contest. As a club we host a local contest. The winner of our club contest than competes at the District level. District winners are then eligible to compete at the National level. Winners receive scholarship funds at each level.

Contestants must enter through a local Optimist Club, or an At-Large contest if a local club is not available. An At-large student may not have competed in an Optimist International or District contest in the same year. 3.

We are working on an alternative plan for the district meeting, oratorical and CCDHH contests. Zone and Regional levels of the oratorical contest should be postponed pending further discussion regarding possible dates for these contests. As soon as a decision has been made a notification will be sent out.
The contest is open to students under the age of 18 as of October 1 2019. Contestants are eligible for only one Club's contest during any given year. No student who has previously won a District Optimist Essay contest scholarship will be eligible to compete at any level fo the competition again.
